⭐️ My Favorite iOS 16 Feature

After WWDC kicks off next Monday, all eyes and focus will be on iOS 17, the other new operating systems, and any hardware Apple has coming up for us. Before we get there, I want to share a feature of iOS 16 that I have absolutely loved.

One of the headline features of iOS 16 is the new Lock Screen that allows for multiple Lock Screens, each with customizable fonts, widgets, and wallpapers. And while there are several options for wallpapers, the one that has been so great for me is Photo Shuffle.

Photo Shuffle Lock Screens

I can't tell you how many times it has resurfaced pictures of my kids, trips we've taken together, our pets, and the places we've been, many of which had been lost in the mix of the photo library. It has been selecting great photos, and the extra bit of magic is how the phone identifies the best part of the photo to display as the wallpaper. It's been a constant source of joy since it was released, and the always-on display of the iPhone 14 Pro only adds to it by making the images visible when they update throughout the day as I glance at my phone.

If you haven't tried Photo Shuffle, I highly recommend it, and here's how to set it up:

  1. Tap and hold on the Lock Screen, or go to the Settings app > Wallpaper > +Add new wallpaper.

  2. Tap Photo Shuffle at the top of the options.

  3. There are four photo categories to choose from: People, Pets, Nature, and Cities. I have all four selected, but you can tap to disable any you don't want.

  4. Set the Shuffle Frequency. Again, there are four options: On Tap, On Lock, Hourly, and Daily. I have mine set to Hourly.

  5. Lastly, you can use featured photos or select them manually. I've been using featured photos.

Apple has a KB article that covers it and also includes the details on changing the clock style, adding widgets, and more. Check it out, it really is fantastic!

📺 Early Reviews for Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro for iPad

Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro for iPad hit the App Store last week, and along with them were early reviews on YouTube. Overall, the first impressions are pretty good, but there's still some work to be done, and hopefully, Apple will address the shortcomings quickly.

One of the most significant issues with Final Cut Pro is its lack of support for working directly off an attached external storage device. That's problematic because you have to copy the files to the iPad to work on them, and then you're dealing with file management, not to mention possible storage limitations on the iPad. This really should be addressed soon in a future update.

I don't use either of these apps enough to weigh in on them personally, so here are some reviews I liked that should be helpful.

🚨 Apple OS Updates

Apple released a whole slew of updates recently. As usual, they include important security fixes, so you'll want to get your devices updated. Details on the updates are linked below.

🎧 Basic AF #10: The WWDC Wishlist

We're less than a week away from WWDC, so it's the perfect time to dish our wishes on what we'd like to see for macOS, iOS, tvOS, iPadOS, and watchOS. We also talk about the rumored 15" MacBook Air that could debut next week, which I think is needed to fill a gap in Apple's lineup for a less expensive, large-screen laptop.

You can to all episodes on basicafshow.com, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and other podcast apps.
